I’m guessing that one of the reasons you’re here is because you’re having trouble with feeding your child. Maybe you’re at a loss about how to start solids for your infant or where to find the best infant food.
The number of infant food products available on supermarket shelves is just mind-boggling – and the ingredients in them are just as confusing! When you are completely responsible for your little one’s nutrition, you know that it has to be 100% fresh, natural, hygienic and nutritionally appropriate for his age. You don’t want to feed them preservatives or added flavors, or find out later that the products you fed your baby earlier are now being recalled!
How to read Infant Food Label ?
The law requires food labels to contain the following information:
- A product name or description – some food names are protected by law, and must comply with certain compositional regulations. For other food names there are no standards but the name should not mislead the consumer
- An ingredients list – the ingredients must be listed in descending order by weight, with the largest quantity ingredient first and the smallest last.
- The amount of any ingredients included in the name of the food.
- Any of the 14 ingredients that can commonly cause food allergy must be included in the ingredients list.
- The ‘Use By’ date which indicates the last date that the food is guaranteed to be safe to eat.
- The contact details of the food producer, packer or seller
- The place of origin, in certain cases
- Any special storage conditions that should be observed
- Instructions for use.
Too Much Sugar in the Infant Food ? is it ok or not ?
WHO advices to start complementary foods at 6 months of age in addition to breast milk. When we start infant food, the biggest question most parents have is Whether they can give salt and sugar ?
The WHO says all added sugars, including fruit juice concentrate, should be banned from all commercial baby foods.
Many commercial baby food preparations in India have HIGH content of sugar in them as like the below one-
Its known as a popular baby food but sadly it’s loaded with SUGAR and MORE SUGAR.
Sugar in the Ingredients
- Milk based mix – Milk solids with sugar.
- Direct Sugar
- Maltodextrin (Disguised sugar) – 2 times dangerous than Sugar and too much of maltodextrin results in obesity, high cholesterol and diabetes.
- Glucose Syrup (Disguised Sugar) – Highly processed and loaded with sugar and very dangerous for kids as it may cause addiction.
While the below label is from our Little Moppet Foods and you can see there is NIL SUGAR added in the ingredients. It’s JUST PLAIN INGREDIENTS that you have in your Kitchen pantry and nothing else.
